The springs originate from Jigokudani (Hell Valley), a volcanic crater from 10,000 years ago that you can walk through. Oni (demon) statues dot the town as its mascot. The Jigokudani Backyard Tour (¥5,000) takes you into restricted zones. Daiichi Takimotokan offers day-use (¥2,250) with 35 baths and 5 spring sources.
