Sherray Rock Water Sauna

Opened in 1989, this is a 35-year veteran bathhouse in Gugi-dong at the foot of Bukhansan. Water is the preoccupation here: the owners removed the filtration system altogether and supply only fresh water each day. The dry sauna runs at 95°C and the steam sauna at 52°C, and the scrub masters carry a strong reputation. Gugi-dong, neighbour to Pyeongchang-dong and Buam-dong, is awkward to reach by subway — which is exactly why it stays quiet and green. The bathhouse stands near the Gugi Tunnel junction and has been named a Best Bathhouse by the Jongno-gu district hygiene office for 15 consecutive years. The bedrock groundwater it draws on has passed water-quality testing across 46 drinking-water criteria, and even the cold bath is filled with it. Seshin (Korean full-body scrub), in which an attendant works away dead skin, costs ₩25,000 for men and ₩30,000 for women. A haircut is ₩15,000. Entry is ₩12,000. Hours are 05:00 to 20:00, closed every Tuesday. There are lockers, a waiting area and wi-fi, both cards and cash are accepted, and groups are welcome. The place is small and can fill up, and while the building has parking, it is often full. Etiquette notices are clearly posted throughout.
