Yeoyongguk is a Korean herbal spa that has run since 2008 in a quiet residential street in Jamsil. The name comes from Yeoyongguk-jeon, a Joseon-era novel by An Jeong-bok that likens caring for one's face to a king governing a country — the idea being to look after your body and face wisely. Every session begins with a constitution check. Using a diagnostic kit made from around 100 fermented medicinal plants and an O-Ring test, the therapist reads your constitution and current condition, then chooses the herbs, aroma oils, ceramics and hand techniques to match. Three techniques are Yeoyongguk's own: hwasa doksul, which sculpts the face with ceramics fired from white, celadon and onggi clay; bangjja gua sha, which uses Korean bronze to work circulation in the scalp and body; and the constitution check itself. The signature course is the 90-minute Yeoyong Premium: constitution check → back and leg care with aroma hot stones → deep cleansing and facial → hwasa doksul and a constitution-matched herbal mask → bangjja gua sha scalp care, finishing with constitution tea and sweets. Afterwards you're told which foods suit your type and which to go easy on. The interior is hanok-style, and every care room is private with its own door (single and double). Japanese is spoken, and the constitution guide comes in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese. The spa is listed among the Korea Tourism Organization's 88 Wellness Picks and Seoul's 100 Beauty & Wellness spots.

Before you visit

About 500 m on foot from Exit 9 of Sports Complex Station (Lines 2 and 9), or 7 minutes from Jamsilsaenae Station. If you drive, parking on the ground floor of the building (behind the main entrance) is free. Please arrive about 10 minutes early; if you are running more than 20 minutes late the session may not be possible, so call the spa (02-412-0100) ahead. The last booking is at 18:00. Since every session starts with a constitution check, it is best not to come straight after a heavy meal. Saemaul Market, Jamsil Baseball Stadium, Lotte World Mall and Seokchon Lake are all nearby, so it is easy to plan around your visit.
