Why Japanese onsen?

Japanese onsen offer a unique combination of natural hot spring water, outdoor baths (rotenburo), and ryokan culture. Just 2 hours by plane from Korea, the weak yen makes it excellent value. If you love Korean saunas, you'll love Japanese onsen.

1. Hakone — Day-trip onsen from Tokyo

85 minutes from Tokyo by Romancecar. Hakone-Yumoto station area has many day-use onsen, so you don't need to stay at a ryokan. Hakone Yunessun is famous for novelty baths like wine and coffee. Combine with Lake Ashi and Owakudani for a perfect day trip.

2. Beppu — Japan's largest hot spring city

Beppu ranks #1 in Japan (and #2 worldwide) for both hot spring sources and water output. Tour the 7 Hells (Jigoku Meguri), try sand bathing at Kamenoi Hotel, and explore a city that literally steams. Take a ferry from Busan to Fukuoka, then a 2-hour train ride to Beppu.

3. Yufuin — Charming onsen village

One hour by bus from Beppu, Yufuin is a quaint onsen village with cafes and galleries along its main street. Walk around Lake Kinrinko, then soak in a ryokan's outdoor bath. If Beppu is quantity, Yufuin is quality. Especially great for couples.

4. Kusatsu — One of Japan's top 3 onsen

About 4 hours by bus from Tokyo. Kusatsu is one of Japan's top 3 famous onsen. The Yubatake (hot water field) in the village center is an iconic spectacle. Free public baths scattered around town, and you can watch the traditional yumomi (water cooling) performance.

5. Arima Onsen — Gold & silver springs near Osaka

About 1 hour from Osaka by train. One of Japan's oldest onsen, famous for two types: iron-rich gold spring (kinsen) and clear silver spring (ginsen). The gold spring is so mineral-rich it turns your skin slightly red. Perfect day trip from Osaka or Kyoto.

6. Noboribetsu — Hokkaido's premier onsen

7. Kurokawa Onsen — Outdoor bath hopping paradise

8. Ginzan Onsen — Spirited Away vibes

Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata prefecture features Taisho-era buildings lining a valley stream. In winter, gas lamps light up the snow-covered village — absolutely magical. Rumored (but not officially confirmed) to have inspired Spirited Away. Ryokan reservations are notoriously difficult, so book 2-3 months ahead.

9. Dogo Onsen — 3,000 years of bathing history

Located in Matsuyama, Ehime — one of Japan's oldest onsen with 3,000 years of history. The main building (built 1894) is an impressive 3-story wooden structure featured in Natsume Soseki's novel Botchan. After renovation, a new annex offers modern facilities alongside traditional atmosphere.

10. Ibusuki — Sand bath onsen

At the southern tip of Kagoshima, Ibusuki is famous for sand baths (sunamushi) on the beach. Lie buried in naturally heated sand while waves crash nearby — a truly unique experience. The natural geothermal heat induces deep sweating, different from any Korean jjimjilbang.

Japan onsen beginner guide — etiquette & tips

Like Korean bathhouses, Japanese onsen require nude bathing. Place your small towel on your head. If you have tattoos, look for kashikiyu (private baths). For ryokan stays, the 1-night-2-meals (ippaku-nishoku) plan with kaiseki dinner is the classic experience. Check the onsen analysis sheet to find springs that match your skin type.
