About this place

Notes

The only onsen named among both Japan's Three Famous Springs AND Three Ancient Springs. Documented in the Nihon Shoki (631 AD) — approximately 1,400 years of history. Two water types: Kinsen (gold) turns yellowish-brown from iron oxidation with 1.5-2x seawater salinity. Ginsen (silver) is a clear radium and carbonate water. Seven of the nine mineral types Japan uses to designate a ryoyosen appear in its analysis. Toyotomi Hideyoshi visited 9 times during his lifetime, designating Arima as his direct territory and building a private bath palace (Yuyama Goten). After the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, the ruins were excavated and are now a museum. Kin no Yu (from 650 yen) and Gin no Yu (from 550 yen) are the main public baths. Just 30-40 minutes by train from Kobe Sannomiya.

Practical notes

Two main baths: Kin no Yu (gold spring, brown iron-rich water) and Gin no Yu (silver spring, clear carbonated water). Kin no Yu closed 2nd/4th Tue, Gin no Yu closed 1st/3rd Tue — check the day. Combo ticket ¥850 covers both.
