About this place

Notes

Japan's oldest onsen with over 3,000 years of history. The 1894 Honkan bathhouse — a National Important Cultural Property — fully reopened in July 2024 after 5.5 years of restoration. Four-tier pricing from 700 yen (bath only) to 2,500 yen (private room). Famous as the setting for Soseki's novel "Botchan" and a key inspiration for the bathhouse in Miyazaki's "Spirited Away." Tattoo-friendly. 20 min by tram from Matsuyama Station.

Practical notes

The 2F rest plan (1,300 yen with tatami room, tea, and snacks) is the authentic Honkan experience. Yushinden Imperial bath tour is 500 yen. Asuka-no-Yu has an outdoor bath for a more modern experience.
