Shirahama Onsen (白浜温泉)
시라하마 온천 (白浜温泉)
Thousand-year seaside onsen in Wakayama.
About this place
NotesOne of Japan's Three Ancient Hot Springs. Recorded in the Nihon Shoki and Man'yoshu as "Muro no Onyu." Empress Saimei bathed here in 658 AD — over 1,300 years of history. Saki-no-Yu is the sole survivor of the historic "Yuzaki Seven Springs." Source temp 78°C, 100% kakenagashi. Shirara-hama beach is made of quartz sand with 90%+ silica content. It has a sister beach agreement with Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. About 2.5 hours from Osaka by JR Limited Express Kuroshio. All reserved seats, approximately 13 departures daily.
Practical notes
Saki-no-yu is a seaside open-air bath where the waves come in, and the only survivor of the seven historic Yuzaki baths. Hours change by season so check ahead, and you must enter at least 30 minutes before closing. No towels are provided, so bring your own. The open-air Shirasuna bath is free but mixed-gender, so swimwear is worn. The Nanki Yumeguri pass at ¥1,800 covers 14 baths but is sold to overnight guests only. The sunset foot bath at Senjojiki is a photo spot. Two and a half hours from Osaka by limited express.
