About this place

Notes

A 1,300-year-old onsen town near the Sea of Japan. Ryokan guests receive passes for external bath hopping. Winter (Nov–Mar) is peak season for fresh Matsuba snow crab. About 1 hour 40 minutes from Osaka by limited express.

Practical notes

This is an umbrella name for the hot spring areas within Toyooka City rather than a single facility. The baths people actually tour are the seven soto-yu of nearby Kinosaki Onsen: the Yumepa day pass is ¥1,500 for adults and ¥750 for children, and a single soto-yu entry is ¥800 for adults (raised in April 2023). Ryokan guests are often given the pass at no charge. All seven soto-yu allow tattoos. Walking the town in a yukata and geta is how the area is done. Winter, November to March, is matsuba crab season. Two and a half hours from Kyoto or Osaka by limited express. Each soto-yu closes on a different day, so check the Kinosaki Onsen tourist association listing before you go.
