Seoul Hanjeungmak for a Woman Alone at Night — Four Women-Only Kilns, What to Wear, How Hot, How Long and Which Hours Are Quiet (Fall 2026)

· Chinjeongsup Hanjeungmak — 320 m from Sogang Univ. Station exit 2, also walkable from Sinchon Station exit 7. Jjimjil (6 hours) 14,000 won by day, 15,000 at night; a 12-hour overnight stay is 20,000. Night rates start at 8 pm. Reviews repeat two things: "the kiln is extremely hot" and "the restaurant food is good". It is small — sauna and jjimjil area on one floor with two loft rooms half a level up — and mostly local regulars. The closest option if you need to spend a night around Hongdae or Sinchon.

· Songpa Women's Salt Hanjeungmak — 5 minutes from Songpa Station exit 4, 350 m from Seokchon Station exit 5. Entry 11,000 won; 12,000 if you enter between 20:00 and 05:00. A small kiln house built around its salt room and the cheapest of the three. Some reviews mention regulars chatting loudly into the small hours, so bring earplugs if you plan to sleep. Fits well after Lotte World or Seokchon Lake.

· Spa Lei — near Sinsa Station. 22,000 won for 12 hours. A large women-only spa with a fire kiln, red-clay, charcoal and salt rooms, an open-air bath and a terrace; users name the kiln, the food and the enzyme bath as its core. Twice the price, but a different scale and much quieter. If it is your first time and you would feel better with at least a little foreign-language signage, this is the easy choice.

All three are listed as open 24 hours, year-round.

In a shared jjimjilbang hall, men and women use the same kilns (in the provided clothes). If that bothers you but a women-only venue is out of the way, a place with a separate kiln on the women's side is the middle answer.

· Rodeo Spa — 2 minutes from Apgujeong Rodeo Station exit 5, open 24 hours. The size of a neighbourhood bathhouse, but known for a strong far-infrared kiln and a cold plunge under 15°C, and it has a separate women-only near-infrared kiln. Sleeping rooms are split by gender. Prices are not published online, so check at the counter.

· Bongil Spa Land — Bongcheon-dong, Gwanak-gu. 10,000 won by day, 11,000 after 8 pm; sauna clothes are 2,000 extra. It has a pine-wood-fired kiln, and its red-clay kiln is women-only. Hours are 05:00–23:00, so "night" here ends at 11 pm. Shampoo and body wash are not provided — bring your own.

Both are local places with almost no tourists. If the language worries you, save the "point and show at the counter" card on each venue page to your phone.

· Clothes — kilns in the jjimjilbang area are entered in the cotton T-shirt and shorts the venue gives you. Underwear is fine but will be soaked, so bring a change. Take off underwired bras, metal jewellery and glasses; they heat up. At very hot wood-fired kilns there is often a pile of burlap sacks or large towels by the door — you drape one over your head and shoulders before going in. A kiln attached to the women's bath itself is entered wrapped in a towel.

· Temperature — it varies by room. Low-heat, salt and red-clay rooms are roughly in the 40–60°C range, a standard hanjeungmak 70–90°C, and a wood-fired kiln just after the fire is pulled out is far hotter than that. Trust the "low / medium / high" sign on the door more than any number, and go low → medium on your first visit.

· Minutes — in a hot kiln, 3–5 minutes is plenty the first time. Even Korean regulars rarely stay past 10. Come out, rinse the sweat off with lukewarm water, drink water or sikhye, rest 10–15 minutes, and go again. Three or four rounds is typical. If you feel dizzy or your heart races, leave at once. Skip the hot rooms after drinking, on an empty stomach, or on a day you feel unwell.

· Where to sit — sit on the straw mat or a towel; the higher you sit, the hotter it is. The low spots near the door are the gentlest.

· Night rates — Chinjeongsup, Songpa and Bongil switch to the night rate at 8 pm; Mokdong Paragon Spa at 9 pm (jjimjil 15,000 won). The difference is 1,000–2,000 won, so it is not worth rushing for.

· Quiet hours — neighbourhood kilns are busiest from 7 to 9 pm with the after-work crowd and thin out noticeably after 10 pm on weekdays. Friday and Saturday nights stay busy past midnight. For a quiet kiln, go on a weekday night or a weekday morning.

· Timing matters for wood-fired kilns — the pine-wood kilns (Spacebon, Gangbyeon Spa Land, Bongil) are fired only a set number of times a day. They are hottest right after the fire is pulled out and cool down toward night. If a properly hot kiln is the goal, daytime to early evening beats late night; firing times differ by venue, so a phone call is the sure way. The outdoor charcoal kilns at Supsok Hanbang Land (Seodaemun) close at 21:00, so they do not fit a night plan.

· Staying overnight — most places cap your stay (Spa Lei and Mokdong 12 hours, Gangbyeon 15 hours in the jjimjilbang, Chinjeongsup 12-hour stay for 20,000 won), with an hourly surcharge after that. Some check ID for overnight guests, so keep your passport in the locker with you.

Prices and hours here are compiled from public information; LUWEI has not personally used every venue. Neighbourhood kilns sometimes change prices or close for a day without notice, so three things are worth confirming before you go:

· whether it is open today (there are ad-hoc closures for repairs or water changes)
· for a wood-fired kiln, today's firing times
· if you plan to stay the night, whether overnight stays are allowed and whether a passport is needed
