Quick Answer — What Is a Public-Bath Hotel?
After a full day on your feet, the difference between a cramped shower stall and a proper soak in a big communal bath is everything. The daeyokjang (large public bath) — the heart of Japanese business-hotel culture — has taken root in Seoul. It is usually free for hotel guests, open from check-in until late night (at some hotels, through to the next morning). Like a ryokan, the stay and the bath become one experience, and for many travelers — especially from Japan — the bath is now the deciding factor in choosing a hotel.
The Sento Experience — Dormy Inn Gangnam & Insadong
Dormy Inn is one of Seoul's most faithful transplants of the Japanese sento. The Gangnam branch has an artificial hot-spring bath and sauna, plus the chain's beloved free late-night yonaki soba (rooms from around ₩100,000; the bath is free for guests). In December 2024, Dormy Inn EXPRESS Seoul Insadong opened in Jongno — about 3 minutes on foot from Jongno 3-ga Station, with its public bath and dry sauna open from 3 PM through 10 AM the next morning, free yonaki soba from 9 PM, and even free ice cream by the bath. Sitting right on the Insadong–Ikseon-dong sightseeing route, it is quickly becoming known as the city's newest public-bath hotel.
Hotels with Their Own Jjimjilbang or Sauna
Go Korean-style and the options widen. Hotel Prima in Cheongdam houses Prima Spa, one of Gangnam's largest saunas at 900 pyeong, famous for its mugwort and open-air baths — a few steps from your room (₩28,000 daytime). The basement sauna at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman in Jangchung-dong has been running since 1955, and non-guests can enter for ₩33,000. Anto Resort in Ui-dong gives hotel guests unlimited free access to its resort-class sauna — a wide range of baths from lukewarm to hot, in low, moody lighting (₩120,000 for non-guests).
The Luxury Tier
Push the budget up and hotel saunas become another world. Josun Palace in Gangnam opens its premium spa — hot and cold baths, dry and wet saunas, Penhaligon's amenities — to hotel guests for an extra ₩44,000. Luxury names like Signiel, Four Seasons, and Grand Hyatt each run saunas paired with their pools; at this tier you are really paying for quietness and the view rather than the facilities themselves. If your day is about recovery rather than sightseeing, it earns its price.
By the Airport, and How to Choose
If your trip runs through Incheon Airport, NEST Hotel on Yeongjong Island is close to an ideal answer — a 5-star with a four-season infinity pool and an outdoor Finnish sauna, with spa access at ₩30,000 for guests.
