NotesOpened in 1615, Tsurunoyu is the oldest of 7 ryokan in Nyuto Onsenkyo. The thatched-roof Honjin building, a registered Cultural Property since 2010, once housed guards of the Akita feudal lord. The outdoor onsen is snow-covered in winter.

Oldest and most famous secret hot spring in Nyuto Onsen-kyo, Akita. 4 completely different springs within 50m (white, black, middle, waterfall). 100+ year old thatched-roof buildings. Mixed outdoor bath (milky water, no towels). Day use ¥600 (10:00–15:00, no reservation, closed Monday). Stay from ¥11,150/person. Phone reservation only — winter books months ahead. Snow tires absolutely essential. Weak mobile signal.
