Notes

Kusatsu, a city of hot springs. Steam rising from Yubatake (hot water field) is the town's symbol.

Practical notes

Three free public baths open to visitors: Shirahata-no-yu, Chiyo-no-yu and Jizo-no-yu. Highly acidic water — no soap needed; rinse yourself (kakeyu) before entering. The Yubatake at night. All 3 main public baths are tattoo OK. Wear a yukata for discounts at partner shops. Yumomi water-stirring shows 6 times daily. Free foot bath open 24 hours.
