Seoul Public Bathhouse Guide — Not the Jjimjilbang, the Neighbourhood Mokyoktang: 9,000–15,000 Won, No Booking, Where the Scrubber Is (Fall 2026)

Hanam Sauna — Huam-dong, about 830 m from Seoul Station Exit 12. 05:00–19:00, closed Tuesdays, 12,000 won. Refitted in 2025 with cypress saunas, and a scrubber works on both the men's and women's side (women's basic 30,000, back only 18,000; ask for the men's price on site). Sleeping room and barber on the men's side. If you want a bathhouse near Seoul Station where the scrubber is certain, this is it.

Namdaemun Bathhouse — 144 m from Hoehyeon Station Exit 5, 15 minutes on foot from Seoul Station. Until 20:00, 12,000 won, scrub 30,000 (shampoo 5,000 extra). An old-style bathhouse with one hot and one cold tub, but "skilled scrubber" is a frequently chosen review keyword. Some mention brusque staff — treat it as the closest place for a quick wash and scrub.

Hotel The Designers Seoul Station men's sauna — right at Sookmyung Women's University Station Exit 10, 15,000 won including amenities, until 23:00. The latest-closing bath near the station. Men only; posted information does not mention a scrubber.

SpaceBon Sauna — Gwanghwamun, sauna 12,000 / with jjimjil 14,000, 06:00–23:00. Around 6,600 m² with a pine-fired kiln sauna, halfway between a bathhouse and a jjimjilbang. Closest after a Gyeongbokgung or Seochon day.

Gukilgwan Jjimjilbang Sauna — 153 m from Jongno 3-ga Station Exit 15, men only, 24 hours, 12,000 day / 14,000 night. Clay room, sleeping room and scrub — the answer for a man arriving late at night.

If you want the jjimjilbang instead — Sparex Good Morning City (at Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station Exit 13, 24 hours, 14,000 day / 16,000 night, luggage storage 20,000) is four stops from Seoul Station on line 4.

Seongsu-tang — Seongsu-dong, a bathhouse opened in 1966 and listed as Seoul Future Heritage. 9,000 won, cash, 06:00–22:00, closed Wednesdays. A scrub service is available and it is a walk from the Seongsu café streets. If you pick one "genuinely old bathhouse" in Seoul, this is it.

Sherray Rock Water Sauna — Gugi-dong, Jongno-gu, since 1989. 12,000 won, 05:00–20:00, closed Tuesdays. The owners removed the filtration system and use only fresh bedrock water every day; 15 consecutive years as a Jongno-gu best bathhouse. Scrub men 25,000 / women 30,000, haircut 15,000. Awkward by subway, but perfect after a Bukhansan hike.

Prime Nodaji Sauna — Guui-dong, Gwangjin-gu, 11,000 won, until 21:00. Dry sauna 79°C, cold plunge about 12°C on the men's side, mugwort tub 41.8°C, known for silicone cupping. Lemon Sauna — near Gangbyeon Station, 11,000 won, until 23:00, a lemon-floating tub and an ondol rest room. These two are the Gwangjin-gu neighbourhood pair.

Sungjiyeon Sauna — Seolleung Station, men only. Free early mornings on weekdays, 3,000 won daytime, 7,000 nights and weekends — the cheapest listed price in Seoul. Warm tub 39–40°C, "gold" tub 43°C, cold 17°C. Listed as having many tattooed guests, so a realistic pick for a man worried about tattoos.

The Park Spa Land — near Yeongdeungpo-gu Office, 10,000 won (+1,000 at night), 24 hours. Many scrubbers, a wide range of tubs, dry sauna 88°C, cold 17°C. The choice if you are staying towards Gimpo Airport or Yeouido.

For a bath in Hongdae — Hongdae 24H Bulgama Sauna (200 m from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 4, weekday 12,000 day / 15,000 night) is a jjimjilbang that also works as a plain bathhouse; you can just bathe and leave. The purely local bathhouses in Sinchon and Mapo are often women-only (Chinjeongsup), so men should choose from the list above.

Entry — 9,000–12,000 won at a neighbourhood bathhouse, 13,000–15,000 at a large sauna. Many switch to a night rate of +1,000–2,000 after 8 pm (The Park, Hongdae 24H, Gukilgwan); early mornings go the other way (Sungjiyeon free on weekday mornings, Mokdong Paragon 10,000 from 5 to 9 am). Cards work almost everywhere, but a few places such as Seongsu-tang are cash only, so carry two 10,000-won notes.

The scrub — separate from entry, paid directly to the scrubber inside the bath. Seoul rates are about 25,000–30,000 won for men, 30,000 for women, 18,000 for back only. Scrubbers are often independent operators renting a station rather than staff, so the price can differ when the person changes, and they finish earlier than the bathhouse (usually 7–8 pm). If the scrub is the point, arrive before 6 pm.

Towels and toiletries — most bathhouses hand you one or two small towels at the desk. Shampoo and body wash are stocked at some and not at others (Bongil Spa Land asks you to bring your own); the desk sells single sachets, so it is never a real problem. Hairdryers are usually free, though places like Sparex meter them.

The uniform — a bathhouse has none. If you are handed a jjimjil outfit (1,000–2,000 won), you are in a jjimjilbang.

1. Put your shoes in the shoe locker at the entrance, take that key to the desk. Pay, and you get the changing-locker key on a wristband (at some places the two keys are linked).
2. Undress completely in the changing room and go in with only a towel. Phone stays in the locker — no photos inside the bath, anywhere.
3. Sit and wash before entering any tub. Skip this and someone will tell you.
4. Fifteen to twenty minutes in the warm tub (38–41°C). If you are getting the scrub, this is what softens the skin — cut it short and it hurts.
5. Go to the scrubber, say "seshin" and hold up one finger (one person). If there is a queue, you will be told to wait. On the table it takes 20–30 minutes and ends with a hot rinse. If it hurts, "apayo".
6. Then alternate the dry and steam saunas with the cold plunge. Cold tubs are usually 17–20°C; a few run around 12°C (Nodaji men's side, Uiryeong).
7. Dry off with the towel before the changing room. Lotion, cotton buds and hairdryers are in the changing room.

Three Korean words are enough — seshin (세신) "scrub, please" / hana (하나) "one person" / apayo (아파요) "that hurts". The scrubber shows the price on fingers or a calculator.

Tattoos — most neighbourhood bathhouses post no rule, and in practice small tattoos are not an issue. For full-body work, a place listed as having many tattooed guests (Sungjiyeon) or a private scrub room is more comfortable. Women alone — the sides are fully separate and the women's scrubbers are women, so going solo is entirely normal.

The best window is weekdays, 10 am to 3 pm. Five to six in the morning belongs to the elderly regulars and is busy; weekend afternoons bring families and competition for space (Sherray suggests 3–4 pm). After 7 pm many places have no scrubber, so scrub in the daytime.

Closures — Hanam and Sherray on Tuesdays, Seongsu-tang and Yurimtang on Wednesdays, Venue G Aqua 24 on the third Wednesday of the month, Seerala on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The 24-hour places (Gukilgwan, The Park, Hongdae 24H, Sparex) never close, but drain the tubs for cleaning somewhere between 1 and 4 am.

Arrived late at night — bathhouses are mostly shut. Until 23:00 you have Hotel The Designers (men), SpaceBon and Lemon; after that, the 24-hour jjimjilbangs (Gukilgwan for men, Sparex Good Morning City and Dongmyo, Hongdae 24H).
