Kan no Jigoku Ryokan
칸노지고쿠 료칸 (寒の地獄旅館)
Century-old ryokan with 13-14°C mineral cold spring and 100°C+ wood-fired sauna
About this place
NotesA century-old ryokan in Kokonoe, Oita. The core experience is the extreme temperature contrast. Seeking the essence of onsen. SAUNA37 selected.
Practical notes
The cold spring is mixed-gender, so swimwear is mandatory and a yuami-gi bathing robe is not permitted. There is no swimwear rental, so bring your own (only a small number are sold on site). It runs year-round, not just in summer. After heavy rain in early July 2026 one of the cold-spring pools has reportedly been limited, so a phone check before visiting is safest.
