NotesAn artsy onsen town at the foot of Mt. Yufu (1,583m) in Oita. Japan's second-highest spring output (~900 sources) with soft alkaline water long nicknamed a bijin-no-yu, a beauty bath. Kinrin Lake, where hot and cold springs merge, creates magical scenery. The 1.5km main street features 50+ boutiques, cafes, and art museums including Kengo Kuma's Comico Art Museum. Only 25km from Beppu but the polar opposite in feel: quiet, refined, and designed for women and families.
Practical notes
Kinrin Lake morning mist appears in autumn/winter early mornings. Yufuin no Mori scenic train requires advance reservation. Combine with Beppu: 50 min by bus, 1,100 yen.
